Bones and the Wolves (Compound Words)
Practice Words
Two-syllable compound words formed by joining two smaller words together.
Skel has trained Bones well. Bones can track a scent and sit still when a rabbit is near. He trots close to Skel on the pathway with his nose held high. The two set out at sunrise on the green hillside.
Bones was such a good boy, and he was brave about most things. But one day, a big storm hit at nightfall while he and Skel were out on a hunt. Rain fell hard on the muddy pathway, and thunder shook the ground. Bones froze beside a fallen tree, shaking from head to tail.
Bones ran off towards a hillside. He was so fast that Skel could not keep up with him. Soon, Bones was just a dark shape.
Skel searched well past nightfall, but he could not find Bones. He went home to rest so that he could look again at sunrise.
Zom made Skel some oatmeal to cheer him up. Skel ate the food and thanked Zom, but it did not calm him down.
Zom told Skel that he would head out to look while Skel took a rest. It was well past bedtime. Skel fell asleep as soon as his head hit the bed.
Bones had made his way into the woods. He was lost, and he hid inside a small den to wait out the storm. Then, he found a wolf pack. They watched him with pale eyes from between the trees.
The more time that Bones spent around the wolf pack, the less like a dog he was. He ran down the pathway after a rabbit. Bones was going wild.
By sunrise, Bones had lost the red cloth from his neck. It got stuck on a branch as he ran with the pack. He did not stop to get it. Bones ran free with the wolves now.
Zom found Bones in the woods at sunset. Zom was so glad! But Bones did not greet him like he used to. Bones growled and showed his teeth.
Zom told Skel where to find Bones. As Bones saw Skel, something inside him clicked. He missed his pal. He wanted to be with his pal.
They took Bones home along the pathway. Bones stuck by Skel the whole time. He did not run ahead. When the next storm came, they all stayed safe at home.
