Two-syllable words where two vowels are divided into separate syllables (V/V pattern).
There are a lot of kinds of fish. This type is called a cod. Cod is a big part of lots of people's diet. Have you had cod from a fish and chip shop?
The cod is tracking us. It does not like that we are close by. The cod is off! It swims down to a quiet spot to hide.
We need a rod or a net if we want a hope of catching this cod. It will be a trial to nab it with no tools at hand.
Then Steve came down to the shore. He stared at the water. 'I will catch that cod and eat it for lunch,' he said. He had no rod, no net, and no boat. It would be a trial, but Steve felt sure he could win.
Steve jumped straight in with no plan. He dove into the quiet blue water, arms out, fingers grabbing at nothing. The cod saw him coming and darted into a hollow log. 'This trial will be easy,' the cod said.
Steve swam to the log, but the cod was no longer inside. He looked left, then right, then up and down. The deep sea spread out around him, dark and quiet. The cod had gone.
There it is! The cod is in the kelp. Steve will have to watch himself. A sea lion might be hiding in the kelp as well.
Steve swims past the kelp and finds a sandbar, but it is dim and quiet. The cod swims off again! Where is the cod hiding now? Fish are not the best at staying still.
Steve gets out of the sea. It is too much of a trial trying to catch a cod with no tools at hand. But what is this that he has found on the shore?
It is a bucket! Steve can use the bucket to scoop the fish out of the water. Then he can have his lunch to give him fuel for the rest of the day.
He sits in the sea and waits for the cod to come up close. He is up to his shoulders in the water. Some of the cod are naive and want to find out what is going on.
Steve reacts quickly and scoops up one of the cod with his bucket. He gets out of the sea, feeling so proud. Now what will he make with his cod?
