On the right side of the image, Girl stands outside near a window of a suburban house, smiling happily with one hand extended outward as if feeling the breeze or gesturing at the clearing weather. She is surrounded by pink tulips in a flower bed along the side of the house. A sheer curtain billows out from the open window above her, caught by the wind, and the sky beyond shows brightening conditions after recent rain. Girl is positioned compactly on the right with open space on the left for text overlay.

Rain splashes on my window all week long. Today the sun is out, and the wind rushes past the bushes. I dash outside to the pink flowers, and the breeze brushes my hair. Today my kite will fly!

On the left side of the image, Girl stands on a suburban American street, smiling and looking up at the sky with one hand raised to shield her eyes, holding a kite string in her other hand. The scene is viewed from a high angle looking down, showing neighbourhood rooftops and sidewalks. Several colourful kites fill the upper-left sky β€” a large green monster kite with big teeth and a darting fish-shaped kite are prominent β€” while small figures of other children can be seen flying kites in the background along the street. The right ~40% of the image is open bright sky for text overlay.

I look down my street and see bunches of kites in the air. One has a monster on it. One has a fish with splashes of blue. I made my kite look cool too.

On the right side of the image, a large yellow diamond-shaped kite with a red diamond pattern and pink ribbon tails is displayed against a light blue sky with small white clouds. A blue L-shaped ruler (square ruler) is positioned along the top and right edge of the kite, with red measurement markings along the top showing equal distances, emphasising the symmetry and precise dimensions needed to build the kite. The left side of the image is open sky with a few scattered clouds.

When I made my kite, I measured it in inches to make sure it was just right. Each side had to match the other. If the sides were not even, the kite would not stay in the sky. So I checked the length and height again and again.

On the left side of the image, Girl sits at a table or work surface, leaning forward with a happy, focused smile as she works on cutting out paper shapes for her kite. She holds scissors in one hand while pressing down on a large sheet of paper with the other. The table is covered with craft supplies including a ruler, tape, coloured paper, and an origami figure. Above her head is a thought bubble filled with crafting tools β€” scissors, tape, pencils, and a bottle of glue β€” showing her planning out what she needs. The scene is set indoors against a plain purple-blue background, with the right side of the image left clear.

I made some sketches first to plan the size of each part. Then I cut the shapes from paper so my kite would be light. Paper is light, not heavy like wood. A heavy kite would not fly very well.

Girl is on the right side of the image, running joyfully through an indoor room with a big smile on her face, one hand raised holding a long piece of string that trails and loops behind her across the floor. Her hair flows back with the motion of her running. The setting is indoors with wooden flooring, a large potted plant in the background, teal-coloured walls, and a flower bed visible in the bottom-right foreground. The left side of the image is plain background.

Then I had to buy a long bit of string for my kite. It stretches really far! It was fun to play with. I ran around the house as it trailed behind me.

On the left side of the image, Girl stands on a rooftop, smiling with her arms raised joyfully as she flies a large yellow diamond-shaped kite. The kite soars triumphantly above her, displaying a child's crayon drawing of a smiling pale yellow-skinned troll queen with pink hair and a green dress wearing a crown. Her long dark brown hair and hoodie drawstrings blow in the wind, and her face beams with pride and excitement. The scene is set outdoors on a suburban rooftop at sunset, with a warm orange-pink sky in the background and green plants visible along the roof's edge. The right side of the image is open sky.

Then I went up to the roof and let my kite loose in the wind! It rushed up high! Do you like what I drew on the front? It is a troll queen!

Page 7
On the right side of the image, Girl stands at a three-quarter angle facing slightly left and toward the viewer, looking up at the sky with an excited, determined expression. She holds a kite spool out in front of her, flying her kite upward. The scene is set outdoors in the late afternoon with a warm sunset glowing along the horizon behind a suburban roofline silhouette. Several other kites of various shapes dot the sky above, with Girl's yellow diamond kite climbing past them. Pink flowers and warm-toned bushes line the middle ground in front of the houses. An orange butterfly flutters in the sky near the centre of the image.

After I came down from the roof, I ran out front to watch it climb. My kite reaches up past the houses and zooms past the other kites in the sky. An orange bug watches it too!

Page 8
On the left side of the image, a yellow diamond-shaped kite flies against a soft sunset sky of pinks, purples, and oranges. The kite displaying a child's crayon drawing of a smiling pale yellow-skinned troll queen with pink hair and a green dress wearing a crown. A white string trails from the kite's bottom toward the lower right. The right side of the image is open sky, providing clear space for text overlay.

If you want to make your own kite at home, you will need to have a plan. Look up the right shape first. Then you need some paper, brushes, bits of dowel and some string. Give it a try!
