I lean down for a closer look. The little axolotl does not wriggle away or hide. It climbs out of the puddle and comes to settle at my feet. 'Well,' I say. 'I guess you picked me.' The little axolotl just grins.

I have a pond next to my hut, so I can get water every time I need it. I get down low by the water and hold the little axolotl in both hands. I am very gentle as I set him down into the pond.

The pond is just a hole in the rock and dirt, and it looks a bit bare for my new pet. So I grab a couple of clumps of moss and sprinkle them over the rocks and gravel around the water.
