Jill came in looking awful. Her armor was cracked. 'A scary trap,' she said. 'I used every golden carrot just to stay alive.' Dr Can Do dug in the chest and held out the last carrots. The chest sat empty. Golden carrots took so long to grow.
Dr Can Do drew plans when things went bad. He got out paper and began to sketch. 'Bone meal!' he said. 'It makes crops grow fast. And cactus makes bone meal!' He hit the bench. 'I just need cactus. How hard can that be?'
Dr Can Do stood by his home and looked over the green hills. Far away he could just see the desert. 'I'll grab cactus and be home by dinner,' he said. He packed no food, no water, no armor. Only his tools.
Jill's donkey was eating grass by the gate. Dr Can Do climbed into the saddle. For a moment he almost fell, then sat up straight. The donkey plodded off. 'Quick trip,' said Dr Can Do. 'Grab cactus, soup for dinner. Nothing can stop us.'
The cactus was giant! Thick green blocks stood over him. The needles were as long as fingers. Even the donkey backed away. 'It can't be that bad,' said Dr Can Do, reaching out a hand. Ouch! 'Yes. Yes it can.'
'Plan B,' said Dr Can Do. He put his coat around the cactus and pulled. Ouch! The needles poked out the other side. His coat was full of holes. He grabbed a shovel and began to dig. He could not carry the cactus home, but he could float it over!
After three days, the canal went all the way to the desert. Dr Can Do filled it with water and set a boat with a chest at one end. He lined the chest up under the tall cactus and swung hard. 'No more ouch,' said Dr Can Do.
The boat bobbed home with Dr Can Do and the cactus chest. Jill waited on the bank, mouth open. 'You even made a canal to the desert?' 'Had to,' said Dr Can Do. 'I could not carry it, could I?'
In his workshop, Dr Can Do put the last part in his machine and flicked the switch. Cactus dropped in at one end and bone meal poured out the other. The local farmer scooped some up and ran to the carrot field. 'It works!' Dr Can Do whispered. 'No more ouch, ever.'
Jill bit into a golden carrot. Her eyes went wide. 'It's even better than cake!' 'I need to dig up gold,' said Jill. 'Deep down below, where it's dark and scary.' Dr Can Do was bent over his plans. 'Don't tell me,' said Jill. 'You've got a plan.'
